San Francisquito Creek

Physical Setting

Main content start

Stanford University is located on the southeastern flank of the San Francisco Peninsula, at the base of the Santa Cruz Mountains.  Two major creek systems pass through university lands: San Francisquito and Matadero.  The fertile soils of the area, moderate climate, and the availability of freshwater have allowed the region to be occupied by humans for more than 9,000 years.
